Win over Powell River keeps Rosetown alive in Western Canada Finals

GAME OVER: Goal judge Stan Richards was responsible for this view of the mêlée that ended the third game of the Western Canada Finals on Sunday afternoon between Powell River Regals and Rosetown Redwings.

Richards’ vantage point was the perfect spot and Powell River News photographer Art Powell quickly handed him the camera and yelled “pull the trigger” as players from both sides erupted right at the buzzer.

Rosetown’s 5-1 victory puts them right back into the series. The fourth game goes tonight. Regals lead two games to one.

The reason for the overflow of emotion at the end of the contest was a stiff board-check handed out by a Rosetown forward for no apparent reason.

Regals took umbrage at the incident and the fireworks began.

HISTORICAL NOTE: After trailing 6-3 at one point, Powell River rallied to win game four over Rosetown the following evening by a score of 8-7 to win the series 3-1 and advance to the Canadian final, where they hosted and defeated Val'Dor, Quebec, claiming the Hardy Cup and the first of four national championships for the hockey club.
