Highland dancers win in Las Vegas

Strong showing in Celtic competition
Mel Edgar

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas, especially when it comes to a recent trip made by Powell River Highland Dancers.

Returning with 15 medals from the Las Vegas Highland Games, their dance teacher Margaret Wrotny couldn’t be happier to let everybody know how much fun her students had.

In addition to the medals Margaret said, the trip included a ride up Vegas’ famous strip in a gigantic fuchsia stretch truck, as well as an impromptu highland dance at the centre of Vegas’ casino corridor.

Las Vegas Celtic Society organized the games featuring dance, bagpipe competitions, athletics, and traditional food mid-April.

Local dancers attending the games included Grace Wrotny 11, Ally Boyd, 12, Ailisan Wrotny, 13, Melinda Boyd, 15, Zoe Crookshank, 15, Callie McNeil, 16, and Sophia Lazaroff, 17.

Powell River Highland Dancers hold their end-of-year recital, with traditional and choreographed dances, at Powell River Academy of Music, on Monday, June 15. Tickets, available at the door, cost $8 for adults and $5 for children.
