Players fight hard against BCs best teams

Powell River under-15 Girls’ Aces Volleyball team played in the BC Championships the first weekend of May in Abbotsford. With 56 teams competing, the competition was fierce. Ranked eighth in the province, the girls played against the 16 top-ranking teams in Division 1 Tier 1.

Coach Doug Skinner was extremely pleased with the team’s overall performance. He remarked that “The 30-28, 25-17 win over Focus in the crossover match was huge. With that win alone, the girls were assured a top eight finish in the province. The girls fought hard in every match and made it extremely difficult for top teams in the province to earn their points. Some of the saves were simply amazing.”

After two days of great teamwork and consistent playing, the Aces placed seventh.

Every player contributed to the team’s success, and no one wanted to disappoint the coach. Lauren Mander, team captain, was the top passer while Kayla Reed, Matilda Bertrand and Melinda Boyd were the top attackers with the most kills. The whole team’s excellent serving kept the opposition on its toes with Mander, Boyd, Bertrand and Claudia Piccinin having the longest runs on serves. Kate Fisher played a strong game as a setter and an effective tipper. Meggan Skorey, Sylena Romanyshyn, Chloe Elzer, and Amelia Vincent all played strong defensive games.
