Sole possession of third place in BC Hockey League Island Division standings was on the line when Powell River Kings and Alberni Valley Bulldogs met on Sunday, December 8. The teams entered the game with 34 points each.

Jack Brackett scored his sixth of the season, unassisted, midway through the first period, then set up Nic Porchetta’s seventh of the campaign halfway through the second to put Powell River up 2-0. Alberni cut the lead to one before intermission but Brackett restored the two-goal lead with another unassisted effort, this time shorthanded, at 4:18 of the third period.

Brett Pfoh added an insurance marker at 16:29 to round out the scoring in the 4-1 win.

Kings swept the three-star selections with first going to Brackett, who also had an assist, second to goaltender Derek Krall and third to defender Davis Pennington. Krall stopped 33 of 34 shots; Pennington set up two of the four Kings’ goals.

Attendance at Weyerhaeuser Arena in Port Alberni was 986.

With 36 points, Powell River trails Nanaimo (47) and Cowichan Valley (45) in Island Division standings. Victoria sits at the bottom of the division with 22 points.

Kings return home to face Merritt Centennials at Hap Parker Arena on Friday, December 13. Game time is 7 pm.
