Powell River Kings rode a strong goaltending performance from Derek Krall en route to a second straight win at home over Coquitlam Express, the top team in the BC Hockey League.
Krall stopped all 28 shots he faced in the 2-0 win, including a clear-cut breakaway early in the third period, and was named first star for the second time in as many games.
After a scoreless first period dominated by the Express, who outshot the home team 12-4 over the first 20 minutes, Kings rebounded in a penalty-filled second period, outshooting the visitors 17-7.
Ben Wozney and Hunter McCoy combined to set up Levi Glasman’s 11th goal of the season to open the scoring 7:37 into the middle frame, bringing the crowd of 647 fans to their feet.
After failing to convert on two five-on-three powerplays, Kings finally made the Express pay for costly penalties when Jacob Slipec slapped a rebound past Jack Watson while the home team enjoyed a five on four advantage.
The insurance goal came with less than a second remaining in the second period, giving the Kings a 2-0 lead and rounding out the scoring. Wozney picked up his second assist of the game with help from Dawson McKay.
Coquitlam outshot Powell River 9-3 in the scoreless third period and 28-24 overall.
