Powell River Aquatic Club athletes travelled to Nanaimo to compete in Vancouver Island Regionals from August 2 to 4, breaking meet and club records in the process.

“Some kids took off amazing amounts of time, which for some was unexpected,” said assistant coach Alex Jevons.

Swimmers Madison Giesbrecht, Ayva Gunther and Ainsley Needham qualified for provincials, which will be held August 15 to 19 in Kamloops.

“Unfortunately none will actually be attending provincials due to other arrangements, but it’s still nice to see swimmers qualifying,” said Jevons.

Gunther was also recognized for her season’s achievements.

“Ayva got what [Powell River Aquatic Club] calls a whale’s tale,” added the coach. “It means you have to get a best time in every race you swim that weekend, eight in total. I believe she is the only swimmer who achieved that award this season.”
