Powell River track athletes rack up medals at home

Brooks Secondary School track team hosted the North Island Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships from noon to 8 pm on Thursday, May 2, at Timberlane Park track.

The athletes, coached by Connie Polman Tuin, Scott Glaspey and Dean Thorsell, dominated in hurdles and jumps at the meet.

Samantha Baron placed first in the 100 metre and 400 metre hurdles for senior women. In the junior women’s 80 metre hurdles Brooklyn Vanderkemp placed first, Alison Ruegg second and Kayden Piniewski third. Vanderkemp also placed first in junior women’s 300 metre hurdles. Ian Hoff placed first in junior men’s 300 metre hurdles.

Samantha Baron placed first in senior women’s long jump. Drew Sundberg placed first in senior men’s long jump with Jerome Jessop placing second in this event. In junior men’s long jump Cole Baron took first and Haedyn Drosdovech placed second.

In triple jump Sundberg placed first in senior men’s with Jessop taking fourth place. Drosdovech took the top spot in junior men’s triple jump, Russell Bruckshaw was third and Cole Baron took fifth place.

For junior women’s triple jump Piniewski placed third with Ruegg placing fifth. For grade eight girls, Sylena Klassen placed first.

In high jump, Cole Baron placed first for junior men, Adam Cantryn placed first for grade eight boys and Klassen placed first for grade eight girls. Junior women’s high jump was won by Ruegg.

In javelin, Sundberg placed third for senior men and Scott Mackenzie placed eighth. Teela Trottier placed fourth for junior women in this category and Andrew Durie placed fourth for junior men.

In discus Keegan Abbott placed first for senior men, Tate Van Hees placed fifth for junior men, Ashleigh Buholzer placed fifth for junior women and Trottier took seventh place.

In shot put Mackenzie placed third for senior men, Van Hees placed first for junior men and Trottier was second among junior women.

In the 100 metre dash Drosdovech placed first for junior men, Reanna Gendron placed sixth among junior women and Buholzer came in 19th.

Camryn Cline placed second in the 200 metres and fourth in the 400 metres for senior women. For grade eight boys Cantryn placed seventh.

In the 800 metres for grade eight girls Karlyle Cline placed first. Chris Fisher placed first in the 800 metres for senior men. Fisher also placed second in the 1,500 metres for senior men, while Will Rice placed third and John Harmer placed fifth. For junior women in this category, Buholzer placed eighth.

Finally, in the 4x100 relay Ruegg, Gendron, Piniewski and Klassen placed second.
