Powell River volleyball team vies for Vancouver Island title

Brooks Secondary School senior boys volleyball team recently earned a spot in the 2018 Island Volleyball Championship, which takes place Friday, November 16, and Saturday, November 17, on Salt Spring Island. The team departed for the tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Brooks placed fourth overall at the North Island Championship in Comox, winning three of six matches. The three loses came in Brooks’ first three games against the eventual first, second and third place teams.

“Serving was strong all weekend,” said coach Darcey Gesell.

Top server was Quinn Elzer with 42 completed serves out of 45 attempts for a 93 per cent average with four aces and six deuces throughout the tournament.

Onyx Lutz went back to the line 54 times and served 48 in bounds for an average of 89 per cent, including nine deuces.

Jaxyn Oele completed 38 of 42 serves for an average of 90 percent for the tournament. The team averaged 83 per cent or better on serving throughout the weekend.

Results from the North Island championship, held November 9 and 10 at Highland Secondary School in Comox:

- Mark R. Isfeld Secondary (eventual second-place) defeated Brooks 25-14, 25-21.

- Gulf Islands Secondary (eventual first-place) defeated Brooks 25-19, 25-23.

- Timberline Secondary(eventual third-place) defeated Brooks 25-14, 26-24.

- Brooks defeated Carihi Secondary School (eventual fifth place) 25-21, 25-19.

- Brooks defeated Ballenas Secondary School (eventual seventh place) 25-10, 25-15.

- Brooks defeated Highland Secondary (eventual sixth place) 25-12, 25-22.
