The Savary Island Fun Triathlon takes place this Sunday, July 21 beginning at 9 am. The contest is for all ages and fitness levels, according to organizer Louise Harding, who said there are options available to accommodate people however they wish to take part.

“We hope that almost anyone can find a way to participate,” she said. “We’re open to how someone wants to make it work for them. Our focus is on making it a community event and to raise some money for the firehall.”

All funds raised by the registered non-profit group go toward Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department, she added.

“It’s important that the volunteer firefighters and first responders are recognized on that day for the work they do all year-round, often behind the scenes,” she added.

Registrations are accepted right up until race time, and those from off island can make it a day trip if they choose.

“We do get people who take the 8 am water taxi over from Lund; the boat comes right where the triathlon starts,” said Harding.

One of the most popular traditions is the involvement of Powell River’s Clansmen Pipe Band, which leads a procession of the athletes down the front of Savary Island Road.

“They do the start of the race,” added Harding. “They’ve done that every year since the start of the triathlon and people really love it.”
