Savary Island Fun Triathlon is a summer tradition on the island, combining fresh air, fitness and fundraising for Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department.

The 18th annual edition of the race, which takes place on Sunday, July 29, is one of the major events on the island’s social calendar, according to race organizer Louise Harding.

“It’s one of the biggest community events of the year on the island,” said Harding. “That’s how we like to focus it, but it is a triathlon as well.”

Some 75 triathletes swim 700 metres, bike 12 kilometres and run five kilometres with the friendly aspect of the competition attracting those of all skill and fitness levels. Many participants team up to do the race, said Harding.

“About a third are individuals who do the entire triathlon on their own and two-thirds are in teams of two or three and they do a relay race,” she added. “We get a whole variety of people participating, from those who normally do triathlons to people who have been doing it every year because it’s a community event.”

The day begins with a procession of the athletes down the front of Savary Island Road led by Powell River’s Clansmen Pipe Band.

“That’s a really fun tradition that a lot of people appreciate,” said Harding.

After traversing the island, a celebration takes place at the main fire hall with food provided by Nancy’s Bakery as well as music and prizes.

“We recently registered as a non-profit organization to ensure integrity of the funds raised going to the fire hall,” said Harding.
