Disability Employment Month is being recognized across BC throughout September. Locally, Inclusion Powell River Employment Services helps match clients searching for work to businesses with job openings. Results can be life-changing.

"For our clients, employment makes all the difference in their lives; they feel valued, that they belong and are contributing," said Inclusion employment consultant Lesley Thorsell. “It helps them move forward in all areas of their lives with increased confidence.”

Inclusion Employment Services provides a variety of services for employers and potential employees, including career planning, workshops, financial planning, job development, customized employment and assistance to the employer.

Goat Lake Forest Products used those services to fill an important and unique, after-hours position.

“We were looking for someone to come in and do sawdust control,” said Goat Lake manager Bill Maitland. “It is a fairly meticulous job and needed someone who is on task.”

Maitland was impressed with the service and support received from Inclusion staff that led to the hiring of Mike Bourassa.

“He has been with us two years; it turned out to be a perfect fit,” said Maitland. “Inclusion did their bit with the potential employee while we did the training here, so it worked very well.”

Maitland said Goat Lake would not hesitate to use the services again.

“We have very little turnover here, but if a position of this nature came up again, we would go back to Inclusion,” said Maitland.

Inclusion Employment Services staff work extensively to ensure the relationship between a new employee and employer develops and flourishes.

"It is very satisfying to see how the employee thrives with knowing they have an important role in the business,” said Thorsell.
