McKinney's Pub in Townsite's historic Rodmay Hotel has reopened as a whisky bar and live music venue under new owner/operator Jonathan Cote. Originally from Montreal, Cote has run restaurants in Banff, Victoria and, for four years, was general manager for the Heather Group, running three restaurants and bars in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood, including the Irish Heather's whisky bar, Shebeen.
McKinney's is stocked with a large array of whiskies and, with his background in the fine drink, Cote is offering whisky tasting events by appointment Wednesday through Saturday from 3-5 pm.
"Whisky has always been a passion for me," says Cote. "I love doing tastings and building out the flavour profiles for people."
A full whisky-focused menu is available now with options such as nachos with bourbon, bacon and beef chili; Jameson blue cheese burger; fried grilled cheese with whisky-melted onions; along with homemade steak and ale pie, salads and vegetarian options.
Cote has also been busy bringing live music to McKinney's on weekends. Since the soft opening in mid-April, featuring a sold-out album release party for Lukah Bouchard Band, promoters and bands have been filling up the McKinney’s event calendar with live bands booked through the summer.
"Doing music at McKinney's was a no-brainer, and there was a lack of entertainment options here, coming from the city where something is happening every night," says Cote. "Walking into the room for the first time, it was just perfect with the stage there; it was magical."
Local musicians such as Sam Hurrie have already been playing regularly at McKinney’s, as it offers some of the best acoustics in Powell River. The Music Room owner Tom Dowding provides sound equipment and mixing for all of the events.
McKinney’s hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 3 pm until late with happy hour specials from 3-6 pm. Karaoke, salsa, DJs and other themed nights also occur during the week.
