Catalyst wins award

Catalyst Paper Corporation's Powell River division recently won an award for conservation leadership.

The mill's installation of a G13 turbine that converts waste steam to electricity garnered it a Canadian Industry for Energy Conservation award in the category of energy performance management.

The turbine has increased the mill's power output by eight megawatts, which is enough to power nearly 7,000 homes. The $24-million project is in partnership with BC Hydro and was completed last fall.

"This award recognizes the tremendous efforts of our team to reduce costs, create efficiency and support our commitment to environmental sustainability," stated Powell River division vice president and general manager Fred Chinn. "It's a critical part of our effort to revitalize the mill for the future to ensure our long-term sustainability."

The award was presented on Tuesday, May 17, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, as part of the Energy Summit 2016 conference.

Bench stolen

A bench located on the trail that connects Townsite with the Willingdon Beach trail has been stolen.

The bench, constructed by resident Ted Wrubleski, marked with the letters PRATV and stamped with his name, was unbolted from the ground and carried off sometime the weekend of May 14.

“I put the bench there for old folks to stop and take a rest,” said Wrubleski. “It looked like someone had a little bonfire there and had left some junk behind. I’m ticked off and upset that the area has been abused.”

Anyone with information on the bench’s whereabouts is asked to contact Powell River RCMP at 604.485.6255.
