Off-road vehicle users in Powell River’s backcountry face big fines and prison sentences under new rules imposed by the provincial government.

Effective immediately, some penalties have been increased up to $100,000 to reduce potential wildfires caused by off-roaders and discourage irresponsible motorized trail running.

The penalty for causing a wildfire could include a ticket fine of $575, penalties up to $10,000, or a court fine of up to $1,000,000 and/or up to three years in jail. The person responsible could also be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

To reduce fire risk caused by motorized vehicles, spark arrestors are now required for all off-road vehicles.

"These changes reflect the tougher stand our government is taking to eliminate unnecessary wildfire risks, encourage compliance, protect communities from harm and help keep British Columbians safe,” said minister of forests, lands and natural resource operations Doug Donaldson in a statement announcing the province’s new, tough stance and rules.
