Agrees to regional recreation talks
Powell River Regional District board, at its meeting on Thursday, March 23, agreed to invite the director from each of the district’s five electoral areas, excluding Lasqueti Island, to participate in upcoming regional recreation discussions with City of Powell River and Tla’amin Nation. Electoral Area E director Sandy McCormick reiterated her position and stated that Texada Island will not participate. Initial focus of the talks will be on the operation and funding of Powell River Recreation Complex and then branch out to expanding services throughout the district.

Accepts regional trails plan
The board voted to accept the 2016 Regional Trails Plan as a document to inform and guide future trails planning and decision-making. The board also agreed to move forward with three critical recommendations the now-disbanded Regional Trail Network Chair’s Standing Committee made as it completed its mandate. Recommendations included establishing a trails standing committee, hiring a coordinator and providing liability insurance for volunteers working on the network.

Approves financial assistance
The board voted to provide $30,150, an approximate increase of $5,000 over 2016 levels, to support the 2017 operation of Powell River Community Resource Centre. It also approved a $10,000 grant-in-aid to Powell River Outdoor Recreation User Group Trail Society, which will be divided between the society’s member groups and used to support the work of trail-maintenance volunteers. The board also granted $2,500 to Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association, $1,275 to Lasqueti Island Nature Conservancy and $700 to Powell River Cycling Association.

Adopts five-year financial plan
The board adopted its 2017 to 2021 financial plan bylaw. The five-year plan is adopted as part of the regional district’s annual budgeting process.
