Villa drops cup game
After claiming the Vancouver Island Soccer League Division 3A title last weekend, Powell River Villa soccer club was knocked out of the Challenge Cup tournament in a 2-1 loss to Victoria’s Castaways, a team that placed fifth in Division 3B. Head coach Chris McDonough was missing four starters for the away game and striker Chris Marshman, the team’s third leading scorer this season, and Kurtis Dennison, a key player in Villa’s attacking game, received red cards. Dennison’s infraction came during a melee at the end of the game. Jake Kenmuir scored Villa’s lone goal. The team now prepares for the provincial championships, which take place April 14 and 15.

Skaters excel
Powell River skaters produced excellent results at the recent BC Coast Region Championships. Four athletes from Powell River Skating Club were among 700 skaters competing. Lily Henderson won a gold medal in Star Four, 13 years old and over, and silver in introductory interpretive. Jaya Nouwens was fifth in Star Four in the under 13 category and earned silver in introductory interpretive. Kayden Piniewski placed 10th in Star Five, under 13, and 12th in bronze interpretive. Emma Piniewski finished sixth in Star Five and sixth in gold interpretive, 13 and over.

Minor hockey teams advance
All three Powell River Minor Hockey rep teams have advanced to best-of-three BC Hockey Island League finals. Although the schedule has yet to be finalized, it is likely the midget and peewee teams will host game one this weekend, then travel to Port Alberni for game two on Saturday, March 3, and return home for game three, if needed, on Sunday, March 4. The bantams will travel to play Tri-Port this weekend for game one, and host games two and three, if necessary, on March 3 and 4. This is the first time all three Powell River rep teams have played in the finals, according to Powell River Minor Hockey Association.
