City of Powell River council approved a number of development permits at its meeting on Thursday, April 20, including one that will allow for Canadian Coast Guard’s new Powell River search and rescue station to be located at the former barge-ramp facility adjacent to the south harbour. Council also conditionally approved a permit for development of a 75-unit seniors housing facility next to Powell River General Hospital. It also approved building upgrades to Mother Nature on Duncan Street and a reduction in the city’s required number of off-street parking spaces at the store from 16 to 7.

Supports Salish Sea application
Council voted to send a letter of support to be included in Salish Sea Trust’s application to have a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site designation for the Salish Sea.

Supports legal defence fund
Council approved a contribution of $317.94 to Federation of Canadian Municipalities Legal Defense Fund. The fund, which municipalities voluntarily contribute to, covers costs incurred by the national advocacy organization in its role as an intervener in the courts and is used to obtain legal opinions on policy issues.
