Approves permissive tax exemption
At its September 20 meeting, Powell River Regional District board approved a request to grant a permissive tax exemption to Myrtle Point Golf Club for the land classified by BC Assessment as recreation/non-profit for 2018. The club was asked to provide $917 toward fire protection from Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department in 2018.
Postpones decision on Legion exemption
The board postposed a decision on whether to provide or deny Texada Island’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 232 with a permissive tax exemption. Staff recommended that the organization be denied because it did not meet the the province’s criteria set out in the Local Government Act. Legion representative Tom Read attended the September 20 meeting as a delegation, questioned staff’s interpretation of the legislation and argued that the organization provides community recreation. The board asked staff to consider re-evaluating the Legion’s application and look to BC Assessment’s criteria to see if a partial exemption can be offered. Staff will provide a report at an upcoming meeting in October.
Adopts Texada service establishment bylaws
The board adopted two conversion and service establishment bylaws for Texada services, including for the island’s recreation facilities and operation and maintenance of Texada/Gillies Bay Airport. Both services had previously been offered by the regional district, however, they were based on outdated legislation.
Adopts fire protection service bylaw
The board adopted Malaspina Fire Protection Service Area Loan Authorization, a bylaw that allows it to pursue borrowing to fund the replacement of two fire engines and purchase of other new equipment for the hall.
