ATLANTA (AP) — Eugenio Suárez hit a go-ahead, two-run double off Raisel Iglesias to cap a seven-run ninth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks stunned the Atlanta Braves 11-10 on Thursday to sweep a three-game series.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a one-out homer in the ninth and Alek Thomas followed with a two-run shot, both off Scott Blewett, to get the Diamondbacks within 10-7. After Blewett walked the next batter, the Braves brought in closer Iglesias (3-5), who allowed hits to four of the next five to blow a save for the fourth time this season.
Ketel Marte homered for Arizona in the eighth and had an RBI infield single in the ninth that made it 10-8. After Iglesias got a popup for the second out, Ildemaro Vargas hit an RBI single and Suárez completed the rally with his line drive to left.
CARDINALS 6, ROYALS 5, 10 INNINGS, 1ST GAME
ROYALS 7, CARDINALS 5, 2ND GAME
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Maikel Garcia homered, doubled and scored three times, and Kansas City beat St. Louis in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.
Royals starter Cole Ragans pitched three innings in his return from the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain. He allowed five runs on five hits, struck out four and walked three.
Angel Zerpa (3-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out four. Carlos Estévez earned his 18th save in 21 tries.
Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (3-5) was pulled after four-plus innings with fatigue-related issues. He allowed a season-high seven runs on eight hits.
The Cardinals rallied to take game one of the doubleheader 6-5 on Willson Contreras’ RBI single in the tenth.
Garcia’s two-run homer in the first gave the Royals a 2-0 lead in the nightcap.
Freddy Fermin hit a curveball 406 feet into the third deck in left field to lead off the third, sparking a three-run rally. Jonathan India singled and scored and Garcia doubled and scored on a Salvador Perez single to give the Royals a 5-1 lead.
Contreras singled home the Cardinals’ first run in the first inning and jump started a four-run third with a two-run double. Nolan Arenado followed with a two-run homer to tie the game at 5-all.
WHITE SOX 3, TIGERS 2
CHICAGO (AP) — Tim Elko singled and scored pinch runner Korey Lee in the 10th inning to give Chicago a walk-off win over American League-leading Detroit.
With the win, Chicago split the four-game series. The Tigers had swept the White Sox in April in the first of four series between the teams this season.
Rookie infielder Chase Meidroth went 2 for 2 with three walks and an RBI for the White Sox. Josh Rojas was 3 for 4 with a run scored.
Reliever Steven Wilson (2-1, 1.89 ERA) worked a scoreless 10th inning for the win, stranding two baserunners. Beau Brieske (1-3, 4.57) took the loss, allowing a hit and a walk while getting just one out in the 10th.
Casey Mize worked 4 2/3 innings for the Tigers, allowing two earned runs, six hits and four walks. In the fourth, the White Sox took the early lead on a sacrifice fly by Mike Tauchman and an RBI single from Meidroth.
Chicago’s Sean Burke had the longest outing of his young career, striking out five in seven innings. The 25-year-old kept Detroit scoreless through six before allowing a solo homer to Wenceel Pérez and an RBI single to Dillon Dingler that tied the game at 2 in the seventh.
BLUE JAYS 9, PHILLIES 1
TORONTO (AP) — Bo Bichette hit a two-run homer, Myles Straw and Tyler Heineman each had two hits and three RBIs, and Toronto beat Philadelphia, handing the slumping Phillies their sixth loss in seven games.
Alejandro Kirk had three hits, scored once and drove in a run as the Blue Jays took two of three from Philadelphia.
Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt (6-3) allowed one run and five hits in a season-high seven innings to win for the third time in four starts.
Nick Castellanos had three hits and Kyle Schwarber had an RBI single for Philadelphia, which finished 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.
The Phillies scored six runs in the opening inning of the three-game series but scored just four the rest of the way. They came in having won their previous five road series.
After allowing a career-worst 12 earned runs against Milwaukee in his previous start, left-hander Jesús Luzardo (5-2) struggled again Thursday, giving up eight runs and nine hits in a season-low 2 1/3 innings.
Straw and Heineman had RBI doubles off Luzardo in the second inning, and Bichette capped the four-run frame with his eighth homer.
GIANTS 3, PADRES 2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Robbie Ray struck out nine in seven innings and became the National League’s first eight-game winner as the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Thursday.
Ray (8-1) allowed two runs and four hits with a walk. The 33-year-old left-hander retired the side in order four times and didn’t allow a runner past first base in his final four innings. The 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out four of the first five hitters he faced and retired 11 in a row after Manny Machado’s homer run in the third.
Randy Rodriguez retired three betters and Camilo Doval set down three for his eighth save.
Dominic Smith had three hits, including a two-run ground-rule double that drove in the go-ahead run in the third.
Machado hit his 350th career homer and had two RBIs for the Padres.
ATHLETICS 14, TWINS 3
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif (AP) — Tyler Soderstrom hit a grand slam and a two-run homer, Max Muncy hit a three-run shot in the first inning, and the Athletics beat Minnesota to snap a nine-game losing streak.
Brent Rooker had three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs for the Athletics.
David Festa (0-1), who was recalled earlier Thursday from Triple-A St. Paul, pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs for Minnesota. Jorge Alcala came on after Lawrence Butler drew a two-out walk in the fourth and gave up a single to Jacob Wilson, before Rooker walked and Soderstrom’s slam made it 11-0.
Mitch Spence (2-1) gave up a run on three hits over five innings for the Athletics.
Wilson hit a lead-off homer before Soderstrom’s two-run shot made it 7-0 in the third.
ORIOLES 4, MARINERS 3
SEATTLE (AP) — Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning, and Baltimore beat Seattle to complete a three-game sweep and extend their season-best winning streak to six games.
After the Orioles (25-36) played so poorly through mid-May that manager Brandon Hyde was fired after leading them to back-to-back playoff appearances, they looked like a contender against a strong Seattle squad.
Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 24th homer of the season for the Mariners, a two-run shot in the fifth that made it 3-1.
Rutschman tied it in the next inning when he lined an 0-2 pitch from Bryan Woo (5-3) to left for a two-run homer. Three pitches later, Henderson pounced on a fastball from Woo and drove it to over the wall in right.
Zach Eflin (5-2) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings to win for the second time during the streak. The Orioles have allowed three runs or fewer in each of the six wins.
DODGERS 6, METS 5
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Conforto drove in the tiebreaking run in the Dodgers’ three-run eighth inning, and Los Angeles rallied for a victory over New York to split the NL powers’ four-game series.
Conforto has struggled mightily in his first season with the Dodgers, but he drove a two-out single to left off Reed Garrett (1-2) for the Dodgers’ third unearned run of the eighth.
Will Smith delivered an RBI double moments earlier, and he scored the tying run when the Mets comically misplayed Andy Pages’ grounder to Brett Baty at third.
Mookie Betts had an RBI double and reached base four times for the Dodgers, who went 4-3 on their homestand against New York’s two teams.
Alex Vesia (2-0) got one out in the eighth. Tanner Scott earned his 11th save with his second straight solid performance during a rough season.
Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte hit early homers and David Peterson pitched seven effective innings of three-run ball for the Mets, who lost for only the third time in 12 games.
CUBS 7, NATIONALS 1
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ian Happ homered and drove in four runs on three hits, Pete Crow-Armstrong added his team-leading 16th home run and Chicago beat Washington to earn their seventh consecutive series victory.
Colin Rea (4-2) allowed five hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings after opener Drew Pomeranz completed a clean first as the Cubs won the rubber game and their 16th of their last 21 games overall.
Washington’s Jake Irvin (5-2) allowed three runs over five innings, including Crow-Armstrong’s two-run shot in the first and Happ’s run-scoring double — good for his 500th career RBI — in the second.
Luis García Jr. singled in the Nats’ run in the ninth.
Happ connected for his two-run, 405-foot drive off the facade of the third deck in right field against Jackson Rutledge in the sixth. In the ninth, he followed Reese McGuire’s run-scoring infield single with his own RBI single to center off Eduardo Salazar.
YANKEES 4, GUARDIANS 0
NEW YORK (AP) —Max Fried allowed only an infield single to José Ramírez three batters into the game in six innings to bounce back from his first loss, and New York beat Cleveland.
Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer and added an RBI single as the Yankees headed into their first meeting against the rival Red Sox with their 16th win in 22 games. Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a late run-scoring single.
Aaron Judge had a hit in his only at-bat, reached three times and was intentionally walked twice for the second time this season. Judge ended the night with a .392 average.
Six days after allowing six runs and eight hits at Dodger Stadium, Fried (8-1) had his fourth scoreless outing this season and allowed one hit for the second time this season. He also allowed one hit against Tampa Bay on May 2.
Fried struck out seven, walked two and retired 15 of the final 16 hitters he faced after getting into trouble in the first.
RAYS 4, RANGERS 3
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Taylor Walls hit a two-run single to second baseman Marcus Semien in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay rallied to beat Texas.
Junior Caminero, who homered off Jack Leiter in the second inning, had an RBI single against Robert Garcia (1-3) to pull the Rays to 3-2 earlier in the ninth. After Jake Mangum flied out for the second out, Christopher Morel singled to load the bases.
Walls then hit a grounder to Semien, but no one was covering first base and Caminero came around to score from second for the winning run.
It marked the second straight night the Rays won on a defensive miscue. On Wednesday night, Tampa Bay took advantage of Rangers pitcher Kumar Rocker forgetting to cover first base to score a run and then scored another when Rocker then held the ball as Jonathan Aranda scored from second.
Semien had two solo homers and Jake Burger also went deep for the Rangers.
Cole Sluser (3-1) picked up the win with a scoreless ninth inning for the Rays.
ASTROS 8, PIRATES 2
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Framber Valdez pitched seven strong innings, Isaac Paredes homered twice, and Houston beat Pittsburgh after a lengthy rain delay.
Valdez (6-4) won his fifth straight decision by limiting the Pirates to two runs on five hits with three walks and a season-high 11 strikeouts after waiting out the delay that pushed the start of the game back 3 hours and 22 minutes. The left-hander is now 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA in his last six starts.
Paredes hit his 13th homer of the season leading off the fourth against Mitch Keller (1-8). His 14th, a two-run shot in the ninth, put the game away. Jeremy Peña added three hits and drove in a run for the Astros. The shortstop is batting .361 since moving to the leadoff spot on April 27.
Jake Melton, who made his major league debut last weekend against Tampa Bay, had two hits, including a two-run single against Keller in the fourth.
Keller had been pitching well despite receiving the lowest run support in the majors. The right-hander wasn’t quite as crisp against the Astros, giving up six runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings as his ERA crept up to 4.19.
Jared Triolo had two hits and scored twice for the Pirates, who have dropped four of six.
