SHAWNIGAN LAKE — Police on Vancouver Island say a 12-year-old who was rollerblading with family members has been struck by a car and killed in a crash where speed played a role.

RCMP say it happened along Hillbank Road, north of Shawnigan Lake, at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

They say the victim was rollerblading when the driver of a Honda Civic lost control of the vehicle and struck the youth before hitting a telephone pole.

Police say the driver and a passenger in the Honda, both 17 years old, were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Corporal Alex Bérubé says that while investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, they've determined that speed was "an important factor."

Bérubé says the investigation is in its early stages and anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Shawnigan Lake RCMP.
