A man who allegedly tried to take two police officers’ weapons while assaulting a third constable remains in custody as his case moves forward in Vancouver Provincial Court.
Court documents said David Amega, 22, is charged with one count of assaulting a police officer and two of attempting to take officers’ weapons.
All three charges are related to July 10 events in Vancouver.
The documents allege Amega attempted to take a firearm from one officer and tried to take a conducted energy weapon from another.
At the same time, he is alleged to have assaulted an officer in the course of their duty.
A bail hearing does not appear to have been held although documents indicate a bail hearing publication ban was ordered July 11, the same day the charges were sworn.
On that date, an overnight assessment of Amega was ordered.
The case was adjourned July 15 after Amega refused to appear by video from North Fraser Pretrial Centre (NFPC).
On July 14 and 16, Amega was ruled not fit to appear from NFPC.
Amega’s name did not appear on the July 16-17 court dockets. The Criminal Code of Canada ban section cited on the docket is 517 (1).
A court notice to the media and publication describes a 517 ban as follows: “An order bans publication of the evidence and information given to the court during a bail hearing, as well as reasons given by the judge, until the accused is discharged or, if ordered to stand trial, the trial has ended.”
The section does not cover naming an accused yet names are routinely removed from court dockets, replaced with the words, “BAN IMPOSED.”
