Canada-wide recall for another brand of dried apricot seeds

Apricot seeds or kernels are known to contain a natural toxin that can cause cyanide poisoning.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a third recall for another brand of apricot kernels due to excessive natural toxin in the product this month.

The agency has issued a nation-wide recall for Earth Notions Inc.'s raw bitter apricot kernels.

An investigation by the CFIA showed excessive amygdalin, a natural toxin, in the product which may cause acute cyanide poisoning.

The affected products were sold and distributed across Canada through "internet sales."

So far, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the product. However, CFIA warns consumers to not eat the affected product.

This alert was triggered by CFIA test results and the agency is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other similar products.

“The human body can eliminate small amounts of cyanide, but larger amounts can result in cyanide poisoning, which could lead to death,” reads the agency’s warning in a statement earlier this month.

Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include weakness and confusion, anxiety, restlessness, headache, nausea, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, seizures and cardiac arrest.
