A Surrey Police Service (SPS) officer is recovering after being stabbed on the job.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday (March 9) police were called to a residence where a 27-year-old woman was reportedly screaming and throwing things around, according to a media release. Officers from both the local RCMP detachment and the Surrey Police Service (SPS) responded to the home in the 12300 block of 99A Avenue in a suburban area of Surrey.

When they arrived, the woman tried to flee the scene on foot.

Police pursued and during the chase an SPS officer was stabbed. The officer was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening wounds. They're expected to make a full recovery. In a press release the RCMP note the officer is now recovering at home.

The woman was caught and taken into police custody under the Mental Health Act.

"She is currently in hospital being assessed," Surrey RCMP say in a statement. "The women also had an outstanding arrest warrant for Mischief from an unrelated matter."

An investigation led by the Surrey RCMP into the incident has begun; no charges have been laid at this point in time.

“Regardless of the uniform worn, my priority as the Officer In Charge of Surrey is the safety and wellbeing of all officers serving this city,” says Surrey RCMP Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards. “I have reached out to Chief Lipinski to express my concern and support for the injured officer and everyone else at Surrey Police Service who are feeling the impacts of this traumatic event.”
