One person has died and another was in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Malahat summit.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP responded just before 4 p.m.

Preliminary details indicate a southbound Toyota Corolla collided with a Dodge Ram pickup truck near the highway’s Whittaker Road intersection.

One of the passengers in the Corolla was killed, with the other three occupants sustaining varying degrees of injury, police said.

Both the driver and passenger in the pickup suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

B.C. Emergency Health Services said five ambulances responded and paramedics provided emergency-medical treatment to six people, who were all transported to hospital.

Four of the people were in stable condition.

The highway was partially closed for about four hours as an RCMP collision analyst and the B.C. Coroners office examined the scene and collected evidence.

The investigation is ongoing, and police ask anyone with information to call Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514.
