A commercial truck driver has lost his licence for 90 days and had his vehicle impounded after being caught speeding and failing a roadside breath test near Chilliwack.

At around 1 a.m. on July 26, BC Highway Patrol pulled over a Peterbilt semi-truck on Highway 1 near Yale Road West.

The truck was going 117 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

''There are thousands of professional truck drivers working hard and following the rules every day,'' said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.

''But we are constantly looking for the lawbreakers, and this truck driver showed signs of impairment and failed an approved screening device.''

Police say the 34-year-old driver from Mission also failed a roadside safety inspection for both the truck and trailer. As a result, he was issued:

  • A $138 ticket for speeding,
  • A $368 ticket for not having a working speed limiter,
  • A 90-day immediate roadside prohibition from driving,
  • A 30-day vehicle impound,
  • Heavy-duty towing at his own expense,
  • Removal of licensing for the truck and trailer until repairs are made.
