Updated: Small wildfire held west of Sechelt

A wildfire has been spotted above West Sechelt.

Update 2:40 p.m. Aug 30

Assistant chief Dwight Davidson of the Sechelt Fire Department said the wildfire west of Sechelt is outside of their jurisdiction, and that BC Wildfire is “actioning them with the limited resources they have at this time.

“They prioritize the fires, but none of them are close or moving in the direction toward our community whatsoever.”

He added that the size is also not a concern.

Update 2 p.m. Aug 30

The wildfire west of Sechelt is classified as "being held" as of 1:56 p.m., according to the BC Wildfire Service map. This means it is not likely to spread beyond predetermined boundaries under current conditions. It is still 0.3 hectares. 

Update 12:50 p.m. Aug 30

BC Wildfire has confirmed the current size of the fire is 0.3 hectares and there are six BCWS personnel on it right now and one helicopter.

A wildfire was reported in West Sechelt early Wednesday morning. 

Fire V53065 was reported north of Wakefield Creek at 9:20 a.m., and was swiftly responded to by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

It is suspected that a lightning strike was the cause of fire V53065, which as of 12:24 was estimated at 0.3 hectares. 

The fire is currently listed as “out of control," meaning that the wildfire is continuing to spread and is not responding to suppression efforts. 

 The Sechelt Volunteer Fire Department posted on Facebook at 10:15 a.m., ”We are aware of the wildfire that is currently burning above West Sechelt. There are no structures being threatened. BCWS has an Initial Attack crew actioning the fire at this time. We are in contact with them and available to support them as needed. Thank you to everyone that called it in. This enabled a quick response by emergency crews.”
