If an exceptional woman in the community deserves recognition, now is the time to nominate her for the Powell River Women in Business annual Women of the Year awards.
“There are many outstanding women who work in Powell River,” said Women in Business president Isabelle Southcott. “They own businesses, are employees and also volunteer. This is an event that celebrates those women.”
The awards feature four different categories: outstanding business owner, outstanding home-based business owner, outstanding volunteer and outstanding employee. Nominations are open to anyone in the community, added Southcott.
“We want to stress that to nominate someone you don’t have to be a member of Women in Business and the nominees don’t have to be a member,” she said. “It’s a chance to celebrate all women.”
In addition to acknowledging business owners, the awards aim to highlight roles that are integral to a business’ success but can often be overlooked.
“You can have somebody who is a chambermaid at a hotel or she can be an amazing front office receptionist who has done so much and always makes you feel valued,” said Southcott. “People in those positions are a huge link in the team and the reason why things are so successful.”
Shining light on home-based businesses is also important, according to Southcott.
“Sometimes home-based businesses can fly under the radar because without having a brick and mortar location they can often be a lot more low-key,” she said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase them.”
People are not restricted in the number of nominations they make and are free to nominate women in all categories.
“We encourage everybody to join us,” said Southcott. “It’s a wonderful group and we have such a special evening showcasing the diversity of women and how we contribute in so many ways.”
