Locally owned and operated Great Canadian Cleaners may have started with carpets, but the company has expanded its offerings over the years to provide a wide variety of home and business cleaning solutions.
After moving to Powell River to enjoy the upper coast’s slower pace and many recreational activities almost 10 years ago, Great Canadian owner Keith Allen purchased the then carpet cleaning company in January 2011.
Having a home’s carpets cleaned regularly is a foundation of good home maintenance and improves indoor air quality, says Keith.
“Studies show that carpets act as filters,” he says. “If they’re not getting cleaned properly then they don’t last as long and the air inside can be less than ideal.”
Using the company’s Rotovac 360i with its rotary vacuum head, Keith is able to give carpets a thorough cleaning.
“It helps restore carpets, remove stains, lift carpet pile and provide a deep clean,” he adds.
Keith says his cleaners will move furniture, if required, to ensure the whole carpet is cleaned.
“We put the furniture up on blocks so it isn’t touching the damp carpet,” explains Keith. “That ensures moisture isn't seeping into wooden furniture legs or causing metal ones to rust and stain the carpet.
Great Canadian Cleaners’ services also include upholstery cleaning and stain removal, hard surface cleaning including tile and marble, commercial janitorial services, move-in and move-out cleaning and residential maid services.
Allen also owns TMS Moving Services, a local moving company, and offers clients moving-house package deals where the moving of a customer’s possessions and cleaning of their house can be coordinated in order to make the move less of an ordeal.
The cleanliness of a home’s heating ducts can also significantly impact air quality. As the weather becomes warmer and windows are left open, dust and pollen can become more of an issue, especially as they settle on all surfaces, including inside a home’s forced-air heating ducts.
“Dust and dirt settle in there and then you turn on your furnace in the fall and it gets blasted all over the place,” he says. “It’s important to have that cleaned.”
In addition to carpet cleaning, Great Canadian Cleaners offers air duct and dryer vent cleaning and repair. Lint buildup inside dryer vents reduces dryer efficiency, attracts mould and mildew, and is a cause of thousands of house fires across Canada each year, says Keith.
“We give our customers peace of mind that they are protected,” he adds.
Because the outside of a home can attract grime the same as the inside, Great Canadian offers a range of exterior cleaning options, including pressure washing, rooftop moss control, and exterior house and sidewalk scrubbing.
Whether siding is made from wood, stucco or vinyl, Great Canadian Cleaners uses a soft brush and cleaning solution rather than a pressure washer, which can damage the siding and affect window seals. Great Canadian is also able to take on rain gutter and downspout cleaning and repair.
Keith says his cleaners are professionals and he aims to ensure his customers are completely satisfied.
“What I want is to make sure is that all of our customers are happy with the job,” he says.
Great Canadian Cleaners is available for residential and commercial appointments Monday through Friday and for emergencies on a case-by-case basis.
“My cell phone is always on,” says Keith.
