Mention building a gingerbread house and children immediately think of how good it would taste if they could take a bite out of it. Seniors get a twinkle in their eyes that takes them back to their grandma’s kitchen and the sweet smell of ginger and molasses seeping from the kitchen and throughout the house.

Henderson Elementary School recently recreated the same experience with the assistance of local professional firefighters, who helped students create masterpieces for the 12th Annual Gingerbread Contest at Town Centre Hotel.

Entries dropped off between November 28 and December 3 will be on display at the hotel throughout this month and into early January. For a toonie, visitors can vote for their favourite creations; all funds raised will be matched by Town Centre Hotel and donated to Powell River Professional Firefighters’ burn fund.

For school entries, a first-place prize will be awarded in each division. Other categories include families, adult, teen, businesses and banks. Businesses and bank classes will vie for a plaque and bragging rights.

Awards will be presented on January 3, 2020.
