Tla’amin Nation hegus Clint Williams

On behalf of the Tla’amin Nation, we would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! We hope that everyone has enjoyed a safe and pleasant holiday season.

As our intergovernmental relationships within the Tla’amin traditional territory continue to evolve, we are always looking for new and exciting ways for our communities to continue working together. This past year was a wonderful example of that, both at the City of Powell River and qathet Regional District level. Credit should be given to both organizations for carrying on with some potentially controversial issues with it being an election year. The easy thing to do would have been to table the matters until after the election and deal with these matters at a safer time.

The two matters that I am referring to are:

1) The City of Powell River consenting to lands within the city boundaries to be designated as Tla’amin Treaty Settlement Lands, and;

2) The Powell River Regional District official name change to the qathet Regional District.

We all have been hearing of reconciliation talks that have been ongoing for many years with little to no action. The commitment and follow-through on these talks have demonstrated the courage to carry on with what we can label: reconcili-Action!

There are many things to be grateful for over the past year and I wanted to share that we view these actions as a significant demonstration of the progress being made by communicating and working together as neighbours on these beautiful lands that we all call home.

We wish everyone a safe and prosperous 2019. Che chah hah tahn nah pesht.
