Savarystock 2019, a fundraising festival supporting the work of Savary Island Land Trust (SILT), takes place this Saturday, July 27, on the island.
SILT is active in land stewardship and acquisition, ecosystem protection and public education on Savary Island. Last June, after more than 20 years of work, the group was successful in protecting one third of the island from being developed. The area, often referred to as the “Heart of Savary,” features important examples of coastal sand dunes, old forest and second-growth forest, and is habitat for two at-risk plants: grey beach peavine and contorted-pod evening-primrose.
Savarystock features live music from local musicians including Lukah Bouchard and Devon Hanley, as well as activities for children, silent and live auctions, and a west coast menu prepared by Savary Island Provisions, which is donating 35 per cent of its proceeds to SILT.
The event takes place at the Red House, 1265 Vancouver Boulevard. Gates open at noon and tickets can be purchased online.
