Ages and stages provides fun-based assessment

Annual event for children aged two to five

Story time, healthy snacks, ORCA (On the Road with Children’s Activities) Bus, fire truck, RCMP, car seat technicians, bikes, balance beams, and other fun activities are all in store for children attending the annual Ages & Stages Fair, May 9.

This is the 11th year of the fair organized by Building Blocks zero to five committee. It is based upon the ages and stages questionnaire which assess the stages of a child’s development in the areas of communication, hearing, social emotional, fine motor, gross motor, problem solving, cognitive and adaptive skills. Health unit clinicians will be on hand for vision, language, dental and hearing information.

“This is a fun activity day for children two to five years old, for parents to bring their children and talk to the experts about their child’s development,” said Laura Kew, coordinator for supported child development program at inclusion Powell River. Car seat technicians will also be available to answer questions parents might have.

Building Blocks is a committee made up of various programs including Early Childhood Educators of BC Powell River branch, School District 47 Early Learning, Assumption School, inclusion Powell River occupational and physical therapies, Infant Development Program, Vancouver Coastal Health, Success by 6, Powell River Employment Program Society, Family Place, BOND (Babies Open New Doors) program and StrongStart.

Ages & Stages Fair takes place from 9:30 am to 3 pm on Friday, May 9, at Powell River Recreation Complex. Kew added that families must attend and register by 2 pm in order to allow time for all of the activity stations. Each child receives an activity bag with a free book. Younger siblings are welcome. Activities are both indoor and outdoor.
