A two-week program at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre was the choice of holiday for Cadet Jessica Anne Martin, a member of 2781 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, Powell River.
Jessica is enrolled in the General Training Course, which introduces cadets to life at a summer training centre and prepares them for senior courses in the coming years.
In addition to the field training exercise, cadets attend lectures on life skills, play sports, swim, test their fitness levels, practice their marksmanship with the air rifle and attend a music appreciation class. They learn teamwork, leadership and citizenship, arming them with the tools to provide valuable contributions to Canadian society in terms of environmental and community activities.
Every year, more than 1,200 army, sea and air cadets from Western Canada spend up to six weeks in Vernon, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming new friendships during summer months.
The cadet program is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the Canadian Armed Forces.
