An art-focused evening hosted by The Art Centre and Culaccino on Wednesday, June 6, promises to shed light on local artists while raising funds for Children’s Summer Art Camp in July.

The fundraising event will feature local mural artist Catnip creating a live painting of the evening, which will be auctioned off at the end of the night. DJ Vinyl by Lionel will add to the ambience by bringing along jazz and blues albums from the 1920s through the 1940s.

“It is a small space, so it’s going to be a very intimate and amazing evening,” says The Art Centre children's program coordinator Lorelei Roberts. “We are only selling 28 tickets.”

Tickets include a glass of wine and samples of Italian tapas. The restaurant’s full menu will be also available for those who wish to order more food or different drinks.

Roberts says the silent auction portion of the evening has received positive support from local artists.

“There are so many amazing people who are part the artist community here,” says Roberts. “Donations vary from clothing and art to food, and Townsite Brewing is offering a gift bag for every attendee to take home as part of their ticket. There are going to be door prizes, too, which are amazing.”

Tickets are on sale now at Culaccino or online at pointgrouphospitality.com. Proceeds go toward helping families access the 2018 art camp.

“A bursary fund will be set up for families who need some financial assistance, so the camp can be possible for all kids,” says Roberts.

Children’s Summer Art Camp takes place at The Art Centre above Powell River Public Library. Age groups include three to five years (July 3 to 6), six to eight (July 9 to 13) and nine to 12 (July 16 to 20).

“The kids will be doing a variety of activities, including collage work, painting, drawing with oil pastels, printmaking, screen printing, working with pinhole photography, food art and picnics on the beach,” says Roberts. “It’s a well-rounded summer camp that explores many mediums to introduce kids to something they are interested in or might not even know existed. It's about opening up possibilities.”

Camp runs from 9 am to 12 pm for the youngest group and 9 am to 3 pm for two older groups. Early drop-offs and/or late pickups are available.
