MAKING PROGRESS: Broombusters have a planned cut in Paradise Valley to help rid the area of Scotch broom.

Broombusters will be back in action this weekend in the qathet region, with a cut planned for Paradise Valley.

“The yellow flowers are now coming into full bloom and we can see those pesky plants that have been hiding from us over the last few months,” said City of Powell River fire chief Terry Peters, who has been coordinating the annual cut. “The optimal time is now and it’s vitally important that all of us cover our tracks from previous cuts to make sure no ground will be lost by risking the threat of 18,000 seeds per plant to take over again."

Peters said the next group cut will be at 11 am on Saturday, May 28, at the intersection of Padgett Road and Myrtle Avenue in Paradise Valley. He said to look for signs at the side of the road.

“Every cut plant matters,” he added. “Remember to cut low and below ground so no stem is exposed.”

Other sites of interest for those who want to cut outside of the group sessions are: along the highway from Townsite to Westview, also known as the cut; the backside of Cranberry Lake; Wildwood hill; across from Quality Foods; Mowat Bay; and the Joyce Avenue property near the Chevron station.

Peters said the last word is a big thank-you to everyone who showed up at the Manson extension cut.

“This site is officially busted for this year,” said Peters. “Interesting stats are that we removed four dump truck loads from the area last year and this year it was one and a half pickup truck loads. That is amazing and just proves the value of what we are accomplishing.”
