Highlight will be sailing on Oriole
Cadet follows passion at sea

Lynnsey McQuarrie, a member of Powell River’s Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Malaspina (RCSCCM), has spent three weeks aboard Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Quadra (HMCS) Cadet Summer Training Centre “learning the ropes.”

Lynnsey was selected for the three-week basic seamanship course and this is her second cadet summer course. She, along with 40 other sea cadets from across Canada, has spent the weeks sailing, power boating, learning rope work and making new friends.

Lynnsey, a grade 11 Brooks Secondary School student, joined sea cadets after seeing how many different things she could participate in. “I love sailing” said the eager 16-year-old before starting the basic training. “I can’t wait to go on the HMCS Oriole.” The ship she is referring to is a 31-metre tall-ship and the oldest commissioned vessel in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Royal Canadian Sea Cadets is a national youth program sponsored by the Department of National Defence and the Navy League of Canada. The program is offered to all youth in Canada aged 12-18 and is provided at zero cost to families. Adults interested in volunteering or youth interested in joining, are encouraged to contact Dave McLennan, RCSCCM commanding Officer Lt(N), at [email protected].
