Cadet returns home top of class

Experience proves good things can be free

Vaihau Castagnoli from Powell River has had quite the adventure this summer with two weeks aboard HMCS Quadra in Comox.

Vaihau is a member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Malaspina and he completed the two-week general training course by being one of the top cadets, out of 90, across Canada. He was selected to have lunch with the training centre’s commanding officer Commander Mike McCormick.

“I went sailing, played a ton of sports, played some instruments, met some awesome friends and it was all completely free,” said Vaihau.

Sea cadets is a national youth program sponsored by the Department of National Defence and the Navy League of Canada. The program is offered to all youth in Canada aged 12 to 18 years and is provided at zero cost to families. Adults interested in volunteering or youth interested in joining, are encouraged to contact Malaspina Corps’ commanding officer, Lieutenant (N) Dave McLennan at [email protected].
