With autumn soon here, several programs have started at Powell River Duplicate Bridge Club.
The club meets at the Alano Club on Arbutus Street in the Townsite where all levels of players are welcome.
On the first Tuesday of each month, less experienced players are encouraged to play with more experienced players. This “241” game on the first Tuesday of the month offers players with less than 100 masterpoints an opportunity to play with those players who have more than 100 masterpoints, both for half price.
There is also a mentoring program happening in conjunction with the “241” game. Any player who would like to learn or reinforce the basics of bridge may request a mentor for four sessions.
Already started is a series of lessons designed for beginner or novice players. These lessons take place on Thursday afternoons during regular play at the Alano Club. The lessons are based on Audrey Grant’s pamphlet: Bridge at a Glance.
The parameters of the bridge club’s monthly Marathon Game have changed to allow snowbirds more opportunity to be eligible for this annual award. The average of each person’s best six games on marathon night will now be used. These games take place on the last Tuesday of each month. Marathon games encourage all players to mix up on a more competitive level.
The bridge club hosts many small events throughout the year. These events, such as team games, unmixed pairs games and two session games, are designed to encourage all levels of players to be comfortable at the club.
Club members Jeanne Kerfoot and Rose Andrews recently won the American Contract Bridge League Goodwill Committee award. This honour recognises their commitment to make duplicate bridge more enjoyable for everyone, plus their devotion to promoting and advancing bridge in Powell River.
Days of play are 9:30 am Mondays, 7 pm Tuesdays, 2 pm Thursdays and partners are provided on Mondays and Thursdays.
