Powell River residents will be able to witness a Christmas parade on December 20, with Santa and Mrs. Claus making an appearance.

According to City of Powell River manager of transportation Cam Reed, the city’s public works staff wanted to spread seasonal cheer in a COVID-19-safe way.

“City volunteers are happy to give something back to the community that we are lucky enough to serve,” said Reed.

According to Reed, the parade route was chosen to drive through neighbourhoods without causing too much traffic interruption. He added that carbon credits were purchased to offset the vehicle emissions.

Reed advised those interested in the parade to look on the city’s Facebook page for a route map and updates on the procession’s location.

“If you see our equipment on December 20 out on the streets between 1 and 3 pm, please give room and acknowledge us with a wave or honk,” he added. “Please stay home and keep your social distance.

“Look for RCMP, transit buses, loaders, garbage trucks, dump trucks, a grader, backhoe, fire trucks, the Zamboni and more. Santa and Mrs. Claus will ride along.”

Reed said the message to Powell River from city staff is: Merry Christmas and stay safe.
