City of Powell River’s tax estimator is available for property owners wanting to estimate their 2020 taxes prior to receiving their tax bill in June.

“It breaks down the percentage change and compares it with other homes in the city and how your house compares in the change of the average from last year to this year,” stated chief financial officer Adam Langenmaier in a media release on January 31.

To use the estimator, property owners enter the assessed value of their home; their homeowner grant, if applicable; whether or not the lot is vacant; and tax prepayments. The result is the owner’s total estimated tax, tax highlights, comparisons to 2019, and where tax dollars are spent.

“Some people assume when they see their property tax bill that it’s all city taxes; this is not the case,” stated Langenmaier. “The city collects for several taxing authorities, including the municipality, School District 47, utilities, qathet Regional District, Powell River Regional Hospital District, BC Assessment Authority and Municipal Finance Authority. Those are all included in the total tax bill, as well as the reduction in the flat tax.”
