Sock Hop Time Machine is this year’s theme for the CJMP People’s Prom, back for its fourth year.
In the spirit of proms past, organizers have chosen Studio 56, the site of the historic Bank of Montreal building, in Townsite for the dance party through the ages.
“We thought that it would encourage people to get creative, dress up,” said Dave Brindle, one of the organizers.
The People’s Prom started in Vancouver as the grad party graduates might have wanted. People attend as they are, whatever, however and whoever that is. “There won’t be any school monitors looking over your shoulder,” said Brindle. “Anything goes, from costumes to dance moves.”
Powell River’s People’s Prom started four years ago as a way to celebrate the efforts of volunteers and members that make community radio possible. People loved the concept, said Brindle, and the party has grown every year since.
The prom features CJMP 90.1FM celebrity programmers spinning dance music from the past into the future, and hosted by DanceMaster Dave. There will be a dance marathon, vintage photo booth, popcorn and cash bar.
“It’s our big social event of the year, and the support and attendance we get from the prom has been great,” said Brindle. “This year is going to be the best yet.”
CJMP’s People’s Prom: A Sock Hop Time Machine will be held on Saturday, May 3. Tickets are $10 at the door and the event is for people aged 19 and over. For more information, readers can go to CJMP’s website or visit on Facebook.
