Both youth and adult speakers will share their stories during a community evening of dinner, film and discussion on religion and sexuality hosted by Powell River Diversity Initiative’s (PRDI) Interfaith Mosaic Project, Thursday, March 20.
“This event is about trying to move past tolerance to an appreciation of others, caring enough to understand the challenges someone you love may be facing, and attempting to accept people for who they are first, and not according to which group one identifies with,” explained Evangeline MacDonald, project coordinator. She added that attendees do not have to identify as belonging to the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community to take part in the free event.
The dialogue will be aimed at exploring the challenges and successes of LGBT youth and adults as they map their way through life. The dinner and dialogue will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at Powell River Community Resource Centre, 4752 Joyce Avenue.
“Since 2006 PRDI has offered the community a wide variety of events, activities, and programs to broaden awareness of differences and celebrate diversity,” said Sara Blum, PRDI coordinator. “The LGBT dinner and dialogue offers a forum for youth and adults to express their experiences within their faith communities, explore the connections between faith and sexuality, and create positive connections and conversation.”
A light dinner will be provided free of charge. Readers who would like to attend or have questions about this event may contact MacDonald at [email protected], or 604.485.2675. RSVP is not required, but appreciated.
