SHIVA SEEDS: Malaspina Land Conservancy Society board member Lesley Pihl [left] and Pesticide Free qathet speaker Lisa Marie Whitaker are both part of an initiative by the two groups to bring The Seeds of Vandana Shiva to the Patricia Theatre.

Malaspina Land Conservancy Society (MLCS) has partnered with Pesticide Free qathet (PFq) to purchase a movie viewing of The Seeds of Vandana Shiva.

Dr. Shiva is a fearless firecracker who grew up in India and attained a degree in nuclear physics and a PhD in philosophy, according to MLCS board member Lesley Pihl. Events in her life brought her to the place where she began to speak passionately around the world about Earth democracy, and she has written numerous books. Earth democracy, Shiva explains, honours ecology, biodiversity, sustainability and community.

“If only we had a million more voices like Vandana Shiva, our planet would be in a much better place,” said Pihl. “Vandana shares a message of hope as when she first started speaking there were not many organic farmers or people talking about GMO foods. Now there are millions of organic farmers who understand the cycle of soil and plants. People are standing up against GMO and gene editing.”

Vandana is witnessing a regenerative movement all over the world, and she explains that there are two movements, added Pihl.

One is a healing earth society where there is an awakening of the ecological laws that make the planet thrive and the other is of limitless greed, chemically dependent crops and extraction to the point of extinction. She believes we will reclaim a sustainable way of life, that it is possible.

“We cannot put nature and ourselves as being in competition,” stated Vandana in a speech. “We cannot live the future based on ecological apartheid. Whoever controls the seeds controls the people.”

The screening takes place at 1:30 pm on Saturday, November 5, at the Patricia Theatre.

“Vandana is the perfect mix of heart and head; she is a personal hero of mine, someone to look up to for her bravery and tenacity,” said PFq speaker Lisa Marie Whitaker. “She is a gift that we can only aspire to.”

Admission is free for children/students and $8 for adults/seniors.

“We will have seeds to share and tables with information to show the portion of earth democracy we are creating,” said Pihl. “For MLCS, any donations will go toward our annual fir seedling giveaway in the spring. For Pesticide Free qathet, a film describing pesticide issues is in progress.

“We hope people can join us for this entertaining and enlightening film. We are especially hoping children and students come to watch the film as they are our future."
