Duplicate bridge calls time on 2014

Kuntsi accumulates most master points second year in a row

Powell River Duplicate Bridge Club has awarded its 2014 trophies.

The club welcomes newcomers to the activity and provides lessons. A new series of four lessons for people wishing to improve their game begins Thursday, January 29.

“Each lesson will be designed to improve your bridge game with the use of basic conventions, defence tips and play of the hand strategies,” said Vivian Thickett, club member. Each lesson is $5 and includes a pamphlet of information called “Bridge at a Glance,” by Audrey Grant. For more information about the lessons, readers can contact Vivian at 604.485.4430.

In 2014, there were 12 games recorded with scores over 70 per cent. The largest game of the year was an 80.56 per cent game posted by Kari Kuntsi and Janna Packard.

For the second year in a row, Kari Kuntsi accumulated the most master points in club play.

In April, Rose Andrews and Jeanne Kerfoot were named to the American Contract Bridge League Goodwill Committee. This is a lifetime award presented to those individuals who unselfishly work hard to make duplicate bridge an enjoyable experience for everyone in their community.

In November, the club hosted a Unit 429 Game. The “Tony’s Tacky Trophy” team winners were Tony Thickett, Ben Sills, Kari Kuntsi and Marg Havens.

Trophy awards were presented to the following club members at the end of the year:

• Santokh Sian Senior’s: Sal Vogrig and Marg Havens.
