Easter Messages: New life celebration

Easter Eggs are pretty interesting.

Easter Eggs are pretty interesting. What are some of your favourite memories as a child about Easter?

Did you know that egg-giving can be traced back over 60,000 years with decorated ostrich eggs in Africa? Early Christians took on the tradition and painted the eggs red to commemorate Christ’s blood. Eastern Europeans perfected the egg decorating practice with wax and intricate colours. Later on Fabergé eggs, porcelain laced with jewels, became quite elegant for the rich, while the commoners turned to the chocolate egg habit.

This year our little yellow church in the cedar grove will celebrate Easter with an Easter egg hunt after the church service. Eggs celebrate new life, and we celebrate a new life in Christ. North Americans changed the practice a bit from simply “giving eggs” to hunting.

As Christians we celebrate a risen Christ who brings hope and peace. We know the stories of the empty tomb—what a wonderful gift freely given from God. But now-a-days it seems one must hunt to find that peace and joy. May you find it! May you embrace it! Wishing you a wonderful Easter from Powell River Reformed Church.
