UPDATE: patio in progress at Willingdon Beach establishment

Beach Hut is making progress with construction, renovation and mural by a local artist

For the past three summers the current iteration of the Beach Hut has been a go-to destination for anyone passing through the qathet region, campers at Willingdon Beach campground, and for locals who may enjoy some food on their way to or from the beach.

Although the past few years were not ideal times for the business due to a slowdown in tourism related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the establishment saw an uptick in business last summer. Now Ryan Formosa, representative for the Beach Hut, sees room for improvement at the waterfront location.

“We have this beautiful park right in town on the waterfront,” said Formosa. “But yet our patio is facing the highway, with dust getting into people’s food.”

Currently there is a concrete area with picnic tables sandwiched in-between parking spaces facing Marine Avenue, a highly trafficked area due to it being the main road between Westview and Townsite.

The idea is to build a deck utilizing the backside of the building, which is shaded. The takeout window would also be moved to the back, so patrons could order from there.

The Beach Hut is leased from City of Powell River and Formosa is hoping to also renovate the inside of the space, but the menu will stay fairly the same, serving up the usual burgers, fries, fish and chips, and maybe hot dogs. Formosa said they will have a new person cooking in the kitchen, but he believes the changes will make the space good no matter what.

“We want people to come and sit and see the view,” he added, “have shade and enjoy the summer.”

The back patio is currently under construction and a mural is being painted on the back wall by the artist Christian Borrego, who currently resides in Powell River, BC.

According to Formosa the current plan is to have a 'soft' open so staff have an opportunity to get their bearings and get training. Official opening date will be announced soon.
