Family Day Celebrating family all year round

Being close makes this mom feel very lucky
Family Day Celebrating family all year round

My husband Jim and I moved to Powell River to be closer to my family, and close is exactly what we are.

We spend a lot of time with my parents and love seeing them be Nana and Papa to our boys. I love that they are watching James and Jordan grow up, and sharing all of the milestones and cherished family memories with us, including first steps, first words, birthdays, preschool concerts, swimming lessons and soccer games.

Our favourite family activity includes not only my parents, but also my sister, brother-in-law and aunt and uncle. Every Sunday afternoon we gather at one family’s home and have our weekly visit and dinner together. It is something that we all look forward to, especially on the weeks that it’s not our turn to cook. We never enter or leave a family dinner without hugs for everyone, even if we’ve already seen each other throughout the week. It’s just what we’ve always done and is an aspect of our family life that I think is very special. Now if only we could get my three brothers, their wives and my nieces and nephews to move here we would be an even more dynamic (and crazy) group around the dinner table every week!

We feel very blessed to have such a close family support system here in Powell River and that we have found the perfect place to raise our family. We love to be outdoors with our boys and our favourite play place is Willingdon Beach. James and Jordan both love the playground, water park, grass to play sports on, and the beach trail, complete with squirrels to feed and old machinery to climb on—a little boy’s dreams come true.

Other favourite family activities for us include swimming at Powell River Recreation Complex, enjoying hockey at Powell River Kings games, bowling at the bowling alley, day trips to Donkersley Beach, ball hockey in Nana and Papa’s driveway and baseball in their backyard, summer weekends at the family’s cabin up the lake, and summer barbecue parties with our close friends and their little ones.

We often find ourselves very busy throughout the year and are honoured to be a part of such a wonderful little community, filled with the love and support of both our family and our great friends.

I really do feel lucky every day.
