Family Day Lots to do

Breakfast and afternoon activities engage parents and children

Monday, February 9, is Family Day in BC, the third year that the holiday has been celebrated.

The idea of establishing a mid-winter holiday goes back to the early 1990s, but it was not until 2011, when Premier Christy Clark proposed the holiday for the third week of February, that it gained momentum. Six provinces celebrate families that day annually, but British Columbia eventually chose the second Monday. Because the day is a provincial statutory holiday, employees of the federal government are still required to work that day, a source of frustration for some.

Despite that, it is a day off for most people and in Powell River families will have no shortage of fun activities to partake in during BC’s newest holiday.

Organizers from inclusion Powell River’s 60th anniversary committee are hosting a pancake breakfast for the whole family.

The free event will run from 9 am to 1 pm at Community Living Place (6831 Artaban Street).

In addition to breakfast, crafts and face painting activities as well as a baby play area are being set up.

Organizers are asking the public to pre-register for the event and they are accepting donations at the door. The event is open to all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Those interested in registering or looking for more information can call 604.485.6411, ext 229 or email [email protected].

During the afternoon, readers should consider spending some time at Powell River Recreation Complex in the pool or on the ice. The complex will be open from noon to 4 pm and offer free swimming and skating for the community.

For junior hockey fans and those who may not have ever been to a Powell River Kings game, the team is welcoming the whole community to watch as they take on fierce rival Nanaimo Clippers. The puck drops at 2 pm, centre ice at Hap Parker Arena. Admission to the game is free. The game was made possible by the financial support of a number of Powell River businesses. The team is gratefully accepting non-perishable food donations at the door which will be given to Powell River’s Salvation Army food bank.
