Seaplanes outlawed on Cranberry Lake

An air navigation order may soon be issued prohibiting float planes from Cranberry Lake. A letter from the regional superintendent of airways suggested to council that if aldermen still feel planes are a hazard there, “an air navigation order restricting the lake will be issued.”

The question came about as the result of a move last year by council to restrict the horsepower of boats using the small lake. Department of transport then advised council that a seaplane on water was technically a power boat and that council could not legislate to control them; that federal legislation would make municipal bylaws ultra vires.

Alderman Frank McCloskey, himself a pilot, and C. Parsons, who operates a float plane from the lake, spoke in favour of retaining seaplanes on the lake. McCloskey said Parsons had buoys on the lake which would safely cordon off the swimming area. He contended that seaplanes do not disturb wildlife.

Vote was four to three in favour of council asking the department of transport to place the lake out of bounds to seaplanes.

Those in favour: Aldermen Liebenschel, Hart, Hill and Pike; against: Mayor Court and aldermen McCloskey and Dallos.
