For anyone who has ever wondered what it is like to live with a disability, inclusion Powell River is providing an opportunity to find out.
To mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the society is inviting Powell Riverites to take the challenge of navigating a rough path, getting through an inaccessible doorway in a wheelchair, or finding out how it feels to use the hydraulic lift on the wheelchair-accessible bus. Relying on lip reading, pouring a glass of water while visually impaired, or writing a note using a non-dominant hand, are some of the sensory challenges that will be set up for everyone to experience.
These challenges and other displays on disability issues will be in place 10 am to 3 pm Wednesday, December 3, at Town Centre Mall (across from Walmart).
Staff from inclusion Powell River: Lilla Tipton, executive director, Alex Bjelica and Lynn Roberts are behind the challenge. Distinguished guests will also be in attendance during the afternoon.
Over one billion people, approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population, live with some form of disability. International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3 was proclaimed by the United Nations. It was first observed in 1992 and provides an opportunity to focus on promoting inclusion and removing all types of barriers in society.
Powell River Mobility Opportunities Society, Special Olympics BC, Vancouver Island University and inclusion Powell River will have displays and information about their organizations and the wide variety of supports available in town.
As an added draw, Harvey Chometsky will be creating a community video montage entitled I am Us during the event.
